WIP: Geneatealer Cult Giant Servitor

I've created another machine for the project me and Red Skullz are working on: Nestorian Infestation.
This is something similar to the servitors I posted last week, only bigger, a lot bigger. The statue mask is a cast of a baby dolls face. Behind the mask, I glued FW Calas Typhon's diorama base. The legs and back are from an old Chaos Defiler. I cut the defiler legs at the knees, and turned the joint backwards. I used some cables and electrical bits to cover up the gaps. Like I did with the other robots, I sculpted a hole/third eye in the centre of the forehead.

This is an ancient machine, that stalks the ash wastes outside the Hive City. Its former purpose is long lost. Maybe this walking statue, was ones a terrible weapon. Or maybe it was an instrument, used in peace times, walking in parades of the once great city.

The Genestealer Cult now uses this machine, and others like it, to spread spores and Tyranid bio-gasses into the atmosphere.

WIP: Tzaangors from the Silver Tower

Tzeentch has always been my least favourite chaos god, and I've never really liked Warhammer fantasy. I've always been a fan of the 40k universe, and haven't bought fantasy models for other purposes than to convert them into 40k. But when I saw the leaked pictures of Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower, I changed my mind. Fantasy and Tzeentch can be cool, as long as the models don't look too cartoony. The box is not in any way perfect. It contains some really stupid looking goblin mutants, and the horrors still don't look as horrifying as the old metal ones. But the Tzaangors are amazing. You get six in the box, with three different poses. But it wasn't too hard to convert them, and swap some bits to give them enough variation.

WIP: Genestealer Cult Servitors

Using a instant mould from Green-Stuff World, I copied several baby angel heads from a small statue I bought. I played around with several ideas of how to use the heads, and ended up with this; Two sci-fi looking servitors/robots and a large mutant wearing a creepy mask. I'm not yet sure what these models are supposed to be, but I will somehow use them in my Genestealer Cult.

I gave all the models a hole in their forehead, or a third eye. I recently finished Stephen Kings Dark Tower series, and got inspired by the "Low Men" described in the books. The Low Men have bleeding holes/eyes in the centre of their forehead. The Crimson King (who are the main bad guy, and leader of the Low Men) can see through these holes. I like this idea, and want to do something similar.  The plan is to make holes in the forehead of future Cult members. I really like the thought of the Genestealer Cult's Patriarch being able to see through the third eye of his servants and followers.

Tutorial: Creating the Genestealer Cult Beast

In my last post I showed you my Genestealer Cult Beast. But after posting it, I realized I had only posted a few WIP photos. When I look at other peoples work, I really like to see some pictures of their work in progress. It makes it easier to see which bits where used, and what the thoughts behind the projects are.

While working on the model, I did take some pictures of the progress. I think it would be interesting for some of you to see them all in one place:

This first picture is just an old picture of a Carnifex from my Tyranid army. I think you all know what a carnifex looks like, but it's nice to have a picture of the base model before seeing how I changed it.

The first thing I did was changing the models head. I wanted to make a monster that looks like a mix of a Tyranid and a human. To make the face more human it needed to be flatter. The most important thing was to have the eyes on the front of the face, and not on the sides. I cut away the models face, the front of the jaw and the armoured part of the head. Then I covered it all with greenstuff. I used hand-cream to make it smooth and to not leave any fingerprints. Using a round silicone clay shaper, I made the basic shape of the models eye-socets and nose. I originally planned to go back and give the it eyes in the next sculpting session, but seeing how creepy the head already looked, I left it blind.

I didn't want my Genestealer Beast to be a Carnifex with a human-looking head, so I had to do something with the body. A green-stuff copied Bloodthirster torso, that was intended for another project, was the exact same scale as the head. This torso is very human-looking, and would help make the model look more like a human-Tyranid hybrid. The best way to integrate this pice onto the Carnifex body was to turn the whole thing upside down.

The ribcage was perfect on the models back, as I think this looks a lot more like the armour of Genesealer than the flat Tyranid plates. Turning the Carnifex torso upside down also made the hole where the lower body usually is, pointing upwards. Instead of cutting this pice away, I decided to make it into a biological throne, and give the model a rider.

The rider is based on a 3rd generation hybrid from the Overkill box. I didn't want the model to just sit on the Beast, I wanted the rider to be a part of it. To connect the two models together, I gave the rider cables instead of fingers, to glide into the Beasts back. I also gave the driver a psychic collar (not on this picture), to give the impression that they also have a psychic connection.

I blended the Bloodthirster torso into the rest of the body with more green-stuff. On this stage I also added some additional details, like the Tyranid sores/gills and the cables on the models head.

The hardest pard with this model was finding some fitting arms. Using original Carnifex arms looked really clumpy, and smaller Tyranid arms were too small. In the end I went with long thin insectile limbs, made of Plague Drone limbs with Genestealer Rending Claws on the ends. Tyranids originally have three pairs of limbs. But it looked like something was missing when I tried with four arms, so I added another two. It's a mutant after all.

Lastly the whole model was glued together, and a few extra details was added.

PAINT!

Genestealer Cult Beast

The Genestealer Beast I've been working on for a while is finally finished! And I'm very happy with the final result.

What I like most about this model is that it is very different from the original Genestealer design, but you can still see that it is a Tyranid / Genestealer creature. I think It's more interesting if there are a lot more different Genestealer Hybrids than the ones GW have created.

I want this monstrosity to be a result of mixing Tyranid and human bio-enginering. I'm planning to explore this theme further, and make more weird looking hybrids for my Cult.

Tutorial: Painting Genestealer Cult Bases

I've been asked how I did the bases for my Genestealer Cult models. And since I have a couple of pictures from the building and painting of the bases, I decided to make a quick tutorial:

I. The bases was made by gluing random parts from electronic devises to it. Then I covered most of it with cork, but I made sure you could still see some of the weird bits that look like boxes, cables and canisters underneath. I had a sheet of tile-textured plastic card laying in a pile of basing materials, so I decided to try it out. To make everything blend together, I added a mix of sand, static grass and wood glue.

II. After a priming of black followed by white, to get a quick pre-highlighting, I gave the base a thin layer of GW Deathworld Forest. I think this step could be done with any cammo-green colour, the base will be a lot darker when it's done.

III. The base was shaded with spots of watered down GW Typhus Corrosion in the recesses. I used pure corrosion on the metal parts and tiles.

IV. The tiles was picked out with GW Rakarth Flesh. The skull and skeleton was drybrushed in the same colour.

V. The tiles was painted with a thin layer of GW Pallid Wych Flesh. I did this layer in a stippling motion to give the tiles a natural colour variation to give the impression of marble.

VI. Rust areas was given more layers of Typhus Corrosion.

VII. The whole base was now washed with GW cammo-green and sepia shades. I applied these washes at the same time, making them blend naturally on the base, creating interesting variations.

VIII. Before the green and sepia was dry I randomly added some watered down GW orange shade.

IX. Lastly the white(ish) areas was highlighted with Pallid Wych Flesh.

Genestealer Cult 4th Generation Hybrids

Here's another two 4th generation hybrid for the Genestealer Cult. One converted to be wielding a huge pickaxe, and the other has his standard autogun. I don't think I'm going to build any more Cultists with autoguns, because I think they look ridiculously oversized.

These two guys complete the first squad in the cult. I'm really happy with these models, and I'm looking forward to enter them into the Fang this saturday.

Now I just need to finish the Genestealer Beast!
